Bringing The Rex
back to life

Southern Grove in Joint Venture with London Standard recently purchased the former Rex Cinema, Bethnal Green.

The Joint Venture plans to regenerate the site and secure planning permission for an art deco design-led hotel and an independent, single screen, restaurant cinema.

The proposed scheme includes the reopening of the former Rex Cinema that will be open to guests and members of the public, showing independent films in a relaxed environment.

We want to attract new life, vibrancy and opportunities to this forgotten part of Bethnal Green, working alongside local businesses to deliver a visionary regeneration of the The Rex.

PAST

The cinema opened as Smart’s Picture House in 1913, with its auditorium seating 865. It was rebuilt with an art deco façade by famous cinema architect George Coles in 1938, becoming the Rex through the War years until 1949 when it was bought by the Essoldo chain where it was finally closed to the public in 1967
